About the Nigerian Naira

The naira replaced the Nigerian pound in 1973, taking its name from a shortened form of the word 'Nigeria' itself. Nigeria's central bank has redesigned several denominations over the years, most recently introducing new note designs in late 2022 as part of an effort to combat currency hoarding and counterfeiting. Naira banknotes feature prominent Nigerian historical figures, including independence leaders and cultural icons, printed on each denomination.

Five denominations of notes circulate today, from ₦50 up to ₦1,000, alongside coins from ₦1 to ₦50, though coins are now rarely used in everyday transactions. Cash remains central to daily commerce across Nigeria's markets and small businesses, and counting naira notes quickly and accurately is a genuinely useful everyday task.
